The olive tree is at a high significance in the economic and social lives of the Palestinian people. This means that any changes occur onto the Palestinian olive industry may lead to long-term affecting results at the national, economic, social and political levels. The olive tree occupies 67.3% of the planted lands in the West Bank, and 85% of the total area of planted productive trees in the Gaza Strip. The areas planted with olive trees were at approximate number of 541460 dunums in 2010: 81.4% of which are rainfed areas (PCBS, 2010).
The production size of olives is fluctuating from one year to another as a result of the alternate bearing phenomenon, the rainfall fluctuation and distribution, the poor service, and sometimes the old age of the olive trees, affecting the quantity of the olive oil production. Despite of the large increasing areas of olives, the annual production rate of the olive oil has still not noticeably changed. The annual production rate of the olive fruit reached up to 581651 ton in 2012 i.e., about 35% of the total value of the productive trees in the Palestinian lands, and the total annual production rate of the olive oil was 22951.1 for the same year (PCBS, 2012).
The consumption rate of the olive oil was 10 liter per person per year in the West Bank and Gaza in 1970. Then, it was declined gradually for the next years reaching up to 4 liter per person in 2010. This dramatic change was due to the high increasing rates in the Palestinian olive oil prices, making many Palestinians look for other cheap alternatives.
The Palestinian olive fruits and olive oil form one of the basic agricultural income resources as they have contributed in some years more than 4.4% of the agricultural production value of the Palestinian lands, and 32% of the production value of the productive trees. The Palestinian exports of the olive fruits and oil were in the lead in the international trade for long years, contributing a great addition to the Palestinian trade industry.
The olive industry also offers one of the most essential consumption goods for the Palestinian citizens. So undoubtedly, the availability of such products with competitive prices, qualities and quantities has been an effective factor to the Palestinian food security as well as to other Palestinian industries.
The Palestinian olive industry has been suffering several obstacles and issues over time, most critically are the following:
