First-Generation Students [4.4]
Proportion and number of first-generation students starting and completing degree programs.
Introduction:
Supporting first-generation students is a central component of achieving Sustainable Development Goal 4, which focuses on ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all. First-generation students are those who are the first in their families to attend college or university. Their presence in higher education represents an important step toward social mobility, educational equity, and the expansion of learning opportunities to groups that have historically faced barriers to accessing higher education.
Despite their motivation and strong aspirations, first-generation students often encounter challenges that differ from those experienced by students whose parents have higher education backgrounds. These challenges may include limited academic guidance, financial pressures, a lack of familiarity with university procedures, and difficulty navigating academic expectations. In many cases, first-generation students may also experience feelings of isolation, the pressure to represent their families, or the need to balance academic responsibilities with family or work commitments. These factors can affect their academic performance, retention, and overall university experience.
Recognizing these challenges, universities committed to equity and inclusion have developed targeted programs to support first-generation students. Such support may include academic advising, mentoring programs, financial aid services, orientation sessions that introduce university culture, peer support groups, and initiatives that foster a sense of belonging. Strengthening institutional support for first-generation students contributes directly to improving student success, as it demonstrates a tangible commitment to widening educational participation, promoting social inclusion, and advancing the values of sustainable and equitable learning environments.
