Introduction:

Palestine Technical University – Kadoorie (PTUK) places water sustainability and responsible water management at the core of its institutional vision, aligning its strategic efforts with Sustainable Development Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation. Recognizing the critical importance of water security in Palestine, where water scarcity, climate change, and unequal resource distribution pose pressing challenges, the university has adopted an integrated approach that combines teaching, research, community engagement, and sustainable campus practices. PTUK works to ensure that students not only understand the scientific and technical aspects of water systems but also develop the capacity to innovate practical and locally relevant solutions.

In the academic field, PTUK offers specialized programs and courses in environmental engineering, water resource management, renewable energy, and sustainable agriculture. These programs are designed to equip students with applied competencies in water treatment, hydraulic system analysis, irrigation technologies, wastewater management, and smart monitoring systems. The university also incorporates problem-based and project-based learning approaches, enabling students to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world contexts, particularly within local communities and agricultural regions facing water stress.

Research plays a central role in advancing SDG 6 at PTUK. Faculty members and research centers collaborate on interdisciplinary projects focused on improving water efficiency, enhancing wastewater reuse for agriculture, and developing sensor-based and IoT-supported water management systems. The university also engages in regional and international partnerships that facilitate knowledge exchange, field research, and innovation in sustainable water solutions.

Furthermore, PTUK fulfills a vital community role through outreach programs, training workshops, and awareness campaigns aimed at farmers, school students, local municipalities, and civil society organizations. These initiatives promote water conservation practices, sustainable irrigation techniques, and the safe use of treated wastewater. On campus, the university has implemented measures to reduce water consumption and improve efficiency, including the adoption of water-saving devices and the expansion of green spaces supported by treated water.

Through education, research, and community-focused initiatives, PTUK continues to contribute meaningfully to the realization of SDG 6, demonstrating leadership in promoting a future where clean water and sanitation are accessible, efficient, and sustainably managed for all.

Executive Summary of Clean Water and Sanitation report 2024-2025

The SDG 6 Report 2024–2025 highlights Palestine Technical University – Kadoorie’s strategic progress in promoting sustainable water management, water conservation awareness, and equitable access to clean water resources. Amid the broader national context of water scarcity and environmental challenges, PTUK has positioned itself as a key academic and community leader in advancing Clean Water and Sanitation in alignment with Sustainable Development Goal 6.

During this reporting period, PTUK strengthened its academic offerings in water and environmental studies through programs in Water Resources Management, Environmental Engineering, Sustainable Agriculture, and Renewable Energy Technology. These programs integrate theoretical foundations with practical fieldwork, laboratory applications, and case-based learning, ensuring that students graduate with strong competencies for addressing real-world water challenges in Palestine. The university enhanced the use of digital learning platforms, simulation tools, and GIS-based hydrological analysis to broaden access to high-quality learning experiences.

PTUK also expanded its research contributions by supporting faculty and student-led projects focused on wastewater treatment efficiency, smart irrigation systems, groundwater quality assessment, and sustainable reuse of treated water in agriculture. Collaborative partnerships with local municipalities, agricultural cooperatives, and international organizations have further strengthened the university’s research impact and knowledge transfer capacity.

As part of its social responsibility and community engagement, PTUK organized awareness campaigns, workshops, and training sessions targeting farmers, schools, and local communities to promote responsible water consumption, safe water reuse practices, and environmentally sustainable irrigation methods. The university also implemented campus-level water conservation measures, including efficient irrigation systems for green areas and water-saving technologies in laboratories and facilities.

Furthermore, PTUK actively supports inclusive access to water-related education and skill-building programs through scholarships, community outreach courses, and capacity-building initiatives that extend learning opportunities to underrepresented and rural populations.

By integrating education, research, and community engagement, PTUK continues to play a vital role in advancing SDG 6 at both the national and regional levels. The 2024–2025 SDG 6 Report reflects the university’s commitment to developing responsible citizens and professionals capable of contributing to sustainable water resource management and promoting a healthier and more resilient society.
