Palestine Technical University – Kadoorie (PTUK) announced that a student project from the Faculty of Information Technology and Artificial Intelligence has won a competitive award under the PalUROP program, securing a valuable financial prize—an academic achievement that reflects the University’s culture of excellence and innovation.
The project was developed by students Bara’a Hamdan, Janan Rzeigat, Amr Omair, and Anas Maali, under the supervision of Dr. Hadi Khalilieh, with academic collaboration from Dr. Andrea Bontempelli of the University of Trento.
Titled “End-to-End Deep Learning System for Sign Language and Emotion Classification,” the project presents an integrated artificial intelligence solution designed to analyze emotions from short video clips (up to five seconds) capturing upper-body movements of individuals who are deaf or non-verbal. The system aims to enhance human–computer interaction by enabling more inclusive communication.
Technically, the model employs advanced deep learning techniques, combining convolutional neural networks (CNNs) with a support vector machine (SVM) classifier to achieve high levels of accuracy in both sign language and emotion recognition.
Commenting on the achievement, Dr. Nashat Al-Jallad, Dean of the Faculty, emphasized that this success demonstrates students’ ability to translate theoretical knowledge into impactful, real-world applications. He reaffirmed the Faculty’s commitment to advancing scientific research and expanding student participation in international research initiatives.
Dr. Al-Jallad also acknowledged the support of the PalUROP program and the contributions of academic partners, commending the dedication of both students and supervisors in delivering this distinguished project.
The Faculty expressed its pride in the team’s accomplishment and reaffirmed its commitment to fostering further achievements that strengthen the University’s academic standing at both national and international levels.
