Course Description - Diploma of Interior Design Decorate

  • 8172311: Engineering Drawing by Computer (2) [3 Credit Hours]

    This course is an extension of the course (Engineering Drawing by Computer1). Its aim is to develop the student's skills in AUTOCAD, to build the embodiment designs with higher quality.The student also learns how to create different models for the components that make up the design and showing other details such as interior space allocation, lighting, design scheme, raw material and other information. A complete design file for the project will be produced by the student.


  • 3081021: Engineering Drawing [2 Credit Hours]

    Students learn how to use geometric tools to draw 2D and 3D geometric shapes and multiple configurations and identify & draw them in different shapes and perspective views.


  • 8171209: Interior Design (1) [2 Credit Hours]

    In this course, the student will learn how to allocate spaces inside buildings to different functions, with proper distribution of natural lights, windows, colors, floors and ceilings etc. This will be converted to sketches and then a geometric model is built with cardboard figures to show the details in the design.The resulting Interior design, (showing location, space, function, characteristics) will not onlyfulfils the basic need from the design, but will also include other important standards (aesthetics, benefit, durability, economy). It will also be linked to the architectural design of the building as both (interior design and architectural design) are based on human needs, health, safety, comfort amongst other factors.


  • 8172418: Lighting and electrical wiring [1 Credit Hours]

    This course introduces the student to the requirements of modern lighting systems, which includes: reading drawings, conducting preliminary calculations to determine the lighting requirements and choosing the appropriate type of lamps. It also include introducing students to the theories and principles related to lighting circuits through various examples and applications. In addition, the student will learn how to determine the type and quantities of materials needed for conducting the wiring work in a given project, including electrical panels, size of wires needed for the given load, potential drop, earth systemsas well as other aspects of health and safety matters. Design and safe location of electrical panels, for safe access, easy service and maintenance operations will also be studied.

    The course aims to develop the students’ cognitive abilities and communication skills in Arabic language by introducing Arabic dictionaries, spelling and grammatical errors, and familiarizing them with ancient and modern Arabic literary models including models from the Holy Qur’an.


  • 8171105: History of furniture [2 Credit Hours]

    In this course, students are introduced to the origin and evolution of furniture making through the ages. They will also be familiarized with ancient methods of furniture making with its distinctive styles and compare this with contemporary modern methods. It also introduces the student to furniture structures and the methods of making furniture throughout the ages.


  • 8171207: Carpentry, paint and gypsum workshops [2 Credit Hours]

    This course is intended to introduce the students to wood and gypsum industries and raw materials. It also teaches him/her how to control the tools and design elements, how to select the paints needed by the design and fulfils the purpose required to complete the work.


  • 8172419: Field Training II [2 Credit Hours]

    This is an extension to Field Training (1). Here, the student is expected to develop the skills acquired in earlier training and gain new and advanced practical experience. It is aimed at encouraging the students to keep pace with the industries that fall within the scope of Interior Design and Decoration, especially production and manufacturing of related materials. He is also expected to learn and produce a comprehensive technical report related to the project(s) he gets involved in.


  • 8172423: Industrial Arts / Upholstery [3 Credit Hours]

    In this course, the student will identify the technical and manual manufacturing methods used in different industries, to provide students with theoretical background on the methods of implementing manufacturing technology in industries, to identify the raw materials needed for their manufacture, how to deal with raw materials, what could be suitable for design or manual works.


  • 8172424: Graduation Project [2 Credit Hours]

    Towards the end of his studies in this program, the student is expected to work on, produce and submit a graduation project that reflects his understanding of the many aspects of Interior design and decoration and by using skills acquired either direct from the courses he studied or from his field training. The project may include real design and a model with detailed plans and a list of materials and cost. Assessment of the final year project is normally achieved by a panel of experts (including the student supervisor) and will involve live presentation by the student, after which an oral test is conducted to assess the level of student understanding of the work achieved.


  • 8171104: Technologies of Raw Materials and Carpentry [3 Credit Hours]

    In this course, the student is provided with the necessary information about the materials used in decoration and carpentry as well as the installation techniques. At the end of the course, the student is expected to be able to recognize the materials to use in each project and the way it can be used. In addition, he/she will be able to follow-up on new technological development that may appear – either in the area of raw materials or correct methods to use such materials.


  • 8172315: Engineering Perspectives [2 Credit Hours]

    In this course, the student learns how to express his/ her imagination through drawing, show different projections of objects by hand and by using engineering drawing tools. The student will also learn about the process of showing schematics and transfer them to 3-D geometric objects (buildings) with detailed features that may not appear in the in the projection drawings of the building at hand.

    This course introduces the concept of corruption, its forms and definition as well as the role of civil society institutions and local bodies in combating corruption.


  • 3152182: Air-Conditioning & Plumbing [2 Credit Hours]

    Definition and presentation of the Services Practice used in buildings- Developing students' abilities to evaluate the system used in buildings and their suitability for different buildings- The development of appropriate skills to select the best system with the architectural configuration- Develop the student's ability to read blueprints for plumbing and to know their own symbols- Identify the practical aspects of the plumbing and conditioning of buildings.


  • 8171208: Aesthetics [3 Credit Hours]

    In this course, the student will be acquainted with the technical art schools, will be able to know the value of his/her works of art through critical evaluation based on related rules, criteria and technical terms. He/she will also learn how to describe the design in technical terms, using a selection of terms taken from theories related to works of art.


  • 8172313: Execution Schemes/ decor [3 Credit Hours]

    This course enables the student to understand the importance of the executive plans and helps to develop his/her ability to imagine shapes and use different methods of implementation. Skills to innovate and choose the correct raw material and how to use them to build different design works will also be learned.


  • 8172314: Interior Design (2) [2 Credit Hours]

    This course is complementary to the Interior Design (1), where the application of science is implemented and in a wider sense. This includes a broader and more comprehensive fields such as: nurseries, schools and kindergartens and the included classes, furniture, halls, libraries and their departments, theaters and cinemas, hotels (with their special entrances), lounges, floors, bedrooms and their services, shops and their interior decorations, restaurants, wedding halls etc.) During this course, the student will be given an integrated project on each topic where he is expected to carry out field visits to tie up the knowledge he gained from the course with real situations on the ground.

    Introducing the student to the different models and linking them to practical applications by developing the student's ability to think about materials when implementing design models, while developing the student's ability to draw detailed plans for the different models.


  • 8172410: Architectural Drafting [2 Credit Hours]

    This course introduces the students to manually draw - to scale - plans for different projects and develop his/her skills in using different tools and symbols in the drawing. At the end of the course, the student is expected to produce horizontal, side and front elevation projections in addition to showing detailed of architectural importance in a suitable manner.

    This course aims to solidify the concept of Islamic culture, and to introduce students to sound cultural and intellectual concepts about the sources of Islam, the Islamic faith and its’ pillars, and the Islamic Shariah, which regulates all aspects of life: social, economic and political. It also clarifies the position of Islam on a number of contemporary intellectual issues, and introduces the most important challenges facing Islam and its’ culture.

  • 8172317: Field Training 1 [2 Credit Hours]

    Here, the student will have the opportunity to apply the newly acquired skills and knowledge working for institutions with related industry. In particular, the student is expected to spend some time in a real work environment by joining a team of practicing engineers in interior design, to gain experience in the design office as well as field work. His training may cover materials handling and fitting including: carpeting, wall paper installation, installation of plastic floors, false roofing, plastering, painting, curtain fitting and maintenance.

    This course will enable students to understand , draw and represent shade and shadow properly . It will improve the students imagination and the ability to represent their work as real images using different rendering techniques and methods appropriate to their different projects and designs.

    This course aims at developing students’ repertoire of the English language main skills as well as sub-skills through providing them with broad varieties of language patterns, grammatical and structural rules, and vocabulary items that can enable them to communicate meaningfully within ordinary and real-life contexts and situations. This course is also oriented towards equipping students with the skills they need to comprehend texts, contexts, and situations that are related to ordinary and real-life topics. Throughout this course, students will be exposed to a wide and various aural inputs in order to broaden and deepen their skills in listening, judgment, and critical thinking. Students of this course are expected to acquire and practice the skills they need to maximize their capabilities to express opinions about ordinary and real life topics both orally and in a written format, which will help in widening the students’ academic horizon.

    In this course, the student will be taught to recognize different aspects of the design, defines its elements and principles and develops his/her creative design ability and implement it. The student will also develop his/her skills and use different methods in the use of different tools and materials in the design work. The course also includes using color’s effectively to reflect a sense of warmth and /or coldness with color elements of point, line, space, tone, color gradient as well as texture with applications for each of the previous concepts.


  • 8172312: Carpentry and upholstery workshops (2) [2 Credit Hours]

    In this course, the student will learn about the following skills: link technical information with practical application, identify manual and electrical carpentry tools as well as hand-made upholstery tools and use them correctly and efficiently. Identify materials used in carpentry and upholstery and understand their work techniques so that the students can prepare them for more difficult exercises. The student also learns the basics of occupational health &safety, to protect himself and other workers in the area from any hazard. In part, this requires keeping amaintenance scheduled in effect for the various tools and materials and develop the spirit of teamwork through the implementation of joint exercises.


  • 8171101: Concise History of Arts [3 Credit Hours]

    The student learns about the history of the arts in ancient times and their progression, what distinguished each age from the other and the evolution of human life from the technical point of view. It also provides the student with information of artistic culture, enables him to increase his technical knowledge, as per the chronological order of human life.


  • 8171102: Free hand drawing - lines [2 Credit Hours]

    In this course, the student learns hoe to draw different shapes by hand and identifies the external lines and the internal details of the shape. He will be able to sort out the spaces and shadows, depending on the object’s protrusions or grooves which need to be properly drawn to show such features. The student will also learn how to create shadows using different mediums such as pencils, water colors, coal chalks and wood colors in addition to sorting out design areas manually.


  • 8171210: Engineering Drawing by Computer(1) [3 Credit Hours]

    In this course, the student learns engineering drawing using one of the special computer drawing applications such as AUTOCAD. This course is an extension the engineering drawing for the construction course which the student takes earlier on. The purpose of this course is familiarize students with AUTOCAD for higher efficiency and better quality drawings. It also makes it easy to modify and extend any drawing as the need arises – without starting from scratch. Storage and retrieving of any drawing will be much easier and less time consuming.


  • 8172420: Specifications and Quantities of Interior Design(& Decor) Projects [3 Credit Hours]

    In this course, the student learns how to determine the specifications of a given project and translate this to quantities of materials required for the work to be completed. This may include: woodwork, finishes, metal and wooden structures, roof tiles, false roofing and installation work, amongst others. The course also discusses the types of tenders, related documents, tender announcement and the legal responsibilities for the engineer in charge, the employer, the contractor and the technicians involved. All necessary accounts and specifications related to the project will also be covered.
