PTUK Organizes Palestinian Dress Day with Ministry of Tourism

Palestine Technical University – Kadoorie PTUK, in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, organized Palestinian Traditional Dress Day on its Tulkarm campus. The event witnessed broad official and public participation, reflecting a strong sense of belonging and a shared commitment to preserving national identity and safeguarding Palestinian cultural heritage.

The celebration was attended by Tulkarm Governor Major General Abdullah Kamil, Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Hani Al-Hayek, PTUK President Prof. Hussein Shanak, along with representatives from the Chamber of Commerce, official institutions, security agencies, NGOs, the Palestinian Dress Association, academics, and students.

In his speech, Prof. Hussein Shanak welcomed the attendees, emphasizing that this national day symbolizes a deep-rooted attachment to Palestinian identity. He highlighted that hosting such events aligns with PTUK’s national and educational mission and reflects its determination to be a platform for cultural resilience in the face of erasure and Judaization attempts. He further noted that despite the challenging circumstances in Palestine, the university has continued its academic and administrative progress, achieving significant milestones—most notably entering the QS World University Rankings for the first time and advancing to the 401–600 band in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings.

Governor Abdullah Kamil affirmed that Palestinian traditional dress is not merely an external appearance but an integral part of collective memory and national identity that cannot be uprooted. Preserving it, he said, is a form of cultural resistance and an expression of national consciousness.

Minister Hani Al-Hayek stressed that Palestinian Traditional Dress Day is a renewed opportunity to celebrate heritage and belonging. He explained that the traditional dress is more than clothing—it is a visual record of Palestinian history, narrating the stories of cities and villages while embodying steadfastness and resistance.

The event featured the opening of a comprehensive heritage exhibition, organized in cooperation with the Palestinian Dress Association. The exhibition showcased traditional attire from various Palestinian governorates, handmade embroidery, pottery artifacts, and traditional foods, highlighting the richness and diversity of Palestinian culture.

Students and schoolchildren from Tulkarm contributed to the celebration with cultural and artistic performances honoring the authenticity of Palestinian dress.

On behalf of the Student Union Council, a PTUK student representative expressed pride in reviving this national day, stating: “The Palestinian traditional dress is more than attire—it is a flag representing our identity. As students, we take pride in preserving these traditions while carrying forward our academic and cultural responsibilities.”
