PTUK Conducts a Research on Water Crisis in Hebron

In cooperation with the geologist at Al-Quds University, Prof. Amer Marie, the researcher and the lecturer at the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and Technology, in Palestine Technical University- Kadoorie, Dr. Saed Khayat conducted a new research on the water crisis of Mount Hebron area Using Isotopes to trace the destiny of groundwater after highly recharge amounts in the upper mountain area toward the Dead sea.
This study, which has been conducted under the framework of Zamala grant program funded by Welfare association and the Bank of Palestine, concluded that 90% of the infiltrated recharge on the eastern slopes of the area leaks rapidly through the different geological structures, fractures, faults, Joints and folds, directly to the springs of Al-Fashkha, Qalia and Ein Gedi; in addition to other seasonal springs that lay within the closed military areas alongside the coasts of the Dead Sea. The data reflect strong correlations between the amount of rainfall in the upper recharge area and the total amount of discharge from the mentioned springs along the Dead Sea.
Dr. Khayat stated that this study is of high importance as it provides definitive evidence that most of the groundwater reservoirs with bulky water amount on the southeastern area of the West Bank coincident mainly within the military and tourist areas under full Israeli control. Whereas the upper area, where most of the PWA wells are dogged, is suffering from low storage capacity due to such rapid leakage. These scientific findings prove that the closure of these areas exceeds the fake security pretenses as alleged by the Israelis.
It is worth mentioning in this context that the research paper has been accepted for publication in the Arab Journal of Geosciencespublished by Springer- Germany.
