Palestine Technical University – Kadoorie (PTUK) reinforced its international academic and research presence through its participation in an international conference on Artificial Intelligence, hosted by the Durban University of Technology in South Africa from 22–25 July 2026.
The conference brought together leading researchers and academics from around the world to explore the latest advances in diversity-aware sovereign AI. PTUK was represented by Dr. Hadi Khalilieh, Head of the Department of Computer Science in the Faculty of Information Technology and Artificial Intelligence.
Dr. Khalilieh participated in the conference through two major scientific tracks. He served as the lead instructor for the international workshop, "Lexical Semantics for Diversity-Aware Sovereign AI," which focused on knowledge transfer and capacity building in multilingual artificial intelligence, lexical resources, and AI systems that account for linguistic and cultural diversity. The workshop targeted researchers, faculty members, and postgraduate students specializing in artificial intelligence, computational linguistics, and language technologies.
The workshop featured three scientific lectures covering lexical resources and their role in multilingual AI, the impact of linguistic diversity on technology, methodologies for developing diversity-aware lexical resources, practical case studies, and collaborative data collection approaches.
Participants also engaged in hands-on sessions introducing the Universal Knowledge Core (UKC) framework for building multilingual lexical resources and collaborative methods for collecting linguistic data to support the development of more inclusive and equitable AI systems.
In addition, Dr. Khalilieh contributed to the DataScientia Initiative Workshop, where he delivered a presentation entitled "Language and Personal Data." The session brought together researchers from several international universities and academic institutions, including Makerere University (Uganda), the University of Trento (Italy), and Palestine Technical University – Kadoorie, alongside other partner institutions.
Dr. Khalilieh emphasized that this participation reflects PTUK's strategic commitment to expanding its role in international research initiatives, strengthening academic collaboration with leading global institutions, and advancing AI solutions that embrace linguistic and cultural diversity, further consolidating the University's position as an active contributor to this rapidly evolving field.
