Palestine Technical University – Kadoorie in cooperation with The Palestinian for Culture andCivilization Dialogue PRCD held a workshop under the title “Authenticity and Modernity in the Palestinian Content” for the students of the Palestinian Cause course at the University.
The lecture was delivered by the Comparative Religion Researcher, Dr. Ahmad Al Ashqar- from the Palestinian occupied areas - in presence of the Course Lecturer, Ms. Intesar Alsalman and the Psychological Specialist, Thafer Hasouna as well as Mustafa Kitana from the Students’ Activities Department.
Hasouna explained that the workshop aimed at creating an interaction space for the Palestinian individuals and institutions inside the Green Line Area and developing the students’ personalities academically and culturally through enriching the educational process using experts’ experiences in related fields.
During the workshop, Dr. Al Ashqar reviewed the historical context of the European modern thinking, which appeared between 16th and 18th centuries; an era was known as the “revolutionary age” that witnessed multiple historical conflicts between the different groups in the European community like the Church and the State Conflict and Class Warfare especially during the French Revolution and its effects on Freedom in the European Community.
He explained that modernity means reasonable thinking excluding religious, metaphysical and legendary thoughts, based on objection, resumption and idea discussion and highlighting the human race at the top center of the universe, which ultimately makes a difference between the modern and religious thoughts.
“Modernity focuses on several factors including reasonable thinking, self-determination, personal understanding without others’ interferences, freedom and equality in addition to secular thinking that is based on the separation of religion from politics,”he added.
An open discussion was also initiated for the students about the subject of modernity in the Palestinian content and ways of application in daily life and politics under the moral and religious values of the Palestinian community.
