Palestine Technical University - Kadoorie organized a conference under the title "Genetic Resources: Between Challenges and Realities ", funded by the Christian Aid, in partnership with the Agricultural Relief Center, Palestinian National Center for Agricultural Research, and the College of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine at An-Najah National University, as part of a project to develop genetic plant seeds as a tool in the fight against desertification.
The conference was attended by the assistant of the president of Palestine technical University -Kadoorie Dr.Derar Elyyan, the director of the Agricultural relief in Tulkarem- Khalil Shiha, the governor of Tulkarem, Issam Abu Bakr, the Director General of the National Center for Agricultural Research- Dr. Mohammed Abu Eid, and the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine at An-Najah University, Dr. Sulaiman Al Khalil.
Dr. Raed Al-Kawni from An-Najah university presided the first session and talked about the use of biotechnology in conservation of plant genetic resources and the trails held in Palestine with regards to this topic. Prof. Rezeq Isleemia from Hebron University presided the second session and presented his paper on the effects of climate change on Palestinian plant genetic resources.
In this context, many specialists presented topics that ranged from mechanisms of potassium uptake efficiency of alternative oil crops (safflower and sunflower) in different soil types to In vitro regeneration of chickpea, The use of chloroplast genes as biodiversity markers for Palestinian medicinal plants, phylogenetic relationship among closely related species of the genera Lens,Vicia, Lathyrus and Pisum (Leguminosae) in Palestine, comparison of qualitative, quantitative analysis and antioxidant potential between Wild & cultivated Borago officinalis leaves from Palestine, and the effect of climate change on Palestinian wild flora.
